Embracing Change: Navigating the South Node Eclipse

How do we say goodbye to the version of ourselves we can no longer carry into the future? This question looms large as the South Node travels through Leo and the North Node moves through Aquarius over the next 18 months.

Who Are You Beyond Your Past?

Astrology often becomes clearer when we look through the rearview mirror. The lunar nodes complete a full cycle in approximately 18.6 years. Halfway through that cycle, the signs reverse; what was once occupied by the North Node becomes occupied by the South Node.

The North Node previously traveled through Leo from approximately October 1998 through April 2000 and again from May 2017 through November 2018. Think back to those periods. What were you discovering about yourself? Perhaps you were developing a stronger identity, finding your voice, exploring your creativity, falling in love, becoming a parent, stepping into leadership, pursuing a passion, or learning what made your heart come alive.

The North Node in Leo encouraged us to become more visible. It asked us to develop courage, confidence, individuality, creativity, and a willingness to take up space. We were learning to recognize the light within ourselves rather than waiting for someone else to give us permission to shine.

The Shift: South Node in Leo

But now, with the South Node in Leo, we arrive at a different stage of the journey. We are no longer simply developing an identity; we are examining what that identity has become. The 2026 eclipse may therefore feel like a completion, reckoning, or turning point connected to something that began approximately nine years ago during the North Node’s passage through Leo.

The circumstances may be different, but the underlying lesson may feel familiar. Perhaps the confidence you worked so hard to build has hardened into pride. Perhaps leadership has become control. Perhaps healthy self-expression has become performance. Perhaps the desire to be recognized has become dependent upon approval.

The identity was not necessarily false. It may have been essential to your development. But even a necessary identity can eventually become too small for the person you are becoming. This is not the repetition of the same event. It is the return of a lesson at a different level of consciousness.

Releasing the Life That Once Held You

South Node eclipses frequently bring us into contact with what is familiar, practiced, comfortable, and emotionally charged. An old Leo story may return. Themes involving visibility, creativity, children, romance, leadership, confidence, pride, recognition, or approval may rise again. A relationship, role, ambition, dream, or former version of yourself may reappear—not necessarily because you are meant to reclaim it, but because you are finally ready to understand what it taught you.

There can be grief in this process. We do not only grieve people and places. We also grieve identities. We grieve the person we believed we would become. We grieve the role that once gave our lives meaning. We grieve the dream that carried us through a difficult season, even when we realize that the dream no longer belongs to us. Sometimes we cling to an old identity not because it still feels true, but because we do not yet know who we will be without it.

The Invitation to Let Go

The South Node eclipse asks us to loosen our grip. It reminds us that releasing an identity does not erase the life we lived through it. Nothing meaningful is wasted. The courage, wisdom, love, and experience remain with us even when the role itself must be surrendered.

In my own life and in the lives of the people around me, one word has been echoing repeatedly: Purpose. What gives a life meaning? Arthur C. Brooks teaches that meaning is formed through three connected experiences: coherence, purpose, and significance. Coherence helps us understand how the events of our lives fit together. Purpose gives us a reason to move in a particular direction. Significance allows us to believe that our existence matters beyond our immediate desires.

Read that final sentence again: Your existence matters beyond your immediate desires.

Under a South Node Solar Eclipse, can we release the belief that every desire must be fulfilled in order for life to be meaningful? Can we move beyond the endless pursuit of recognition, success, admiration, and constant happiness?

The Future Awaits: North Node in Aquarius

The North Node in Aquarius points toward the future of this eclipse story. Aquarius is associated with community, allies, social movements, new ideas, collective progress, and goals that extend beyond the individual ego. This does not mean that the individual must disappear into the collective. Aquarius needs the creativity and courage of Leo. But our gifts are no longer meant to exist solely for personal recognition. They must be placed in service to something larger. The purpose this time around is not only about the one; it is about the many.

Within degree theory, 20° is associated with Scorpio, adding an undercurrent of emotional intensity, psychological depth, truth, transformation, and exposure to this Leo eclipse. Superficial relationships may no longer feel satisfying. Connections built around image, performance, control, status, or validation may be tested. We may feel drawn toward relationships in which we can remove the costume and allow ourselves to be known more fully.

The Power of Vulnerability

This eclipse may reveal where pride has been protecting vulnerability. It can uncover the fear beneath the performance, the insecurity beneath the confidence, and the longing beneath the desire to be admired. There Is a Difference Between Being Visible and Being Witnessed. Visibility can be manufactured. Being witnessed requires vulnerability. We can curate an image, perfect the lighting, choose the right words, and present the version of ourselves most likely to be accepted.

To be witnessed is to allow another person to see us before the story has been polished, before the emotion has been explained, and before we know how the moment will be received. When we reveal ourselves honestly, we cannot control how another person will respond. We risk being misunderstood. We risk disappointment. We risk discovering that someone is unable to meet us at the depth where we have chosen to stand. This is why many people desire attention but fear intimacy. Attention allows us to remain in control of the image. Intimacy asks us to step out from behind it.

We may allow people to see our accomplishments while hiding our uncertainty. We may speak openly about our strength while concealing the places where we still ache. We may share the lesson after it has been learned, but struggle to let anyone sit beside us while we are still living through it. A large audience can see us and still not know us. Someone can follow our work, praise our appearance, admire our strength, or celebrate our accomplishments without ever encountering the deeper truth of our inner life. The South Node Solar Eclipse in Leo may expose the distance between the life we display and the life we actually inhabit.

The Desire for Recognition

Leo naturally wants to be seen, celebrated, and recognized. There is nothing inherently wrong with that desire. Human beings need acknowledgment. We need our gifts to be received. We need to know that our presence matters. The deeper question is whether we are seeking recognition for who we truly are or for the role we have learned to perform.

Perhaps you have become the strong one, the successful one, the entertaining one, the responsible one, the spiritual one, the beautiful one, the leader, the caretaker, the teacher, or the person who always knows what to do. These identities may contain truth, but they can also become costumes. The longer we wear them, the more difficult it becomes to admit that we are tired, afraid, uncertain, grieving, angry, lonely, or in need of care. We may fear that stepping out of the role will cost us the love, respect, or belonging that came with it. But love that depends upon performance cannot fully nourish us.

Being witnessed begins when the polished identity softens. To be witnessed does not mean revealing everything to everyone. Vulnerability is not the absence of boundaries. Discernment matters. Not every person has earned access to our most tender places. To be witnessed is to have someone remain present when there is nothing impressive to applaud, nothing dramatic to display, and nothing obvious to solve.

The Aspects of the Eclipse

Sun and Moon Trine Saturn Retrograde in Aries

The eclipsed Sun and Moon form a supportive trine to Saturn retrograde in Aries, offering grounding within an otherwise emotionally intense eclipse period. Saturn retrograde asks us to review our relationship with authority, discipline, personal responsibility, boundaries, and self-leadership. In Aries, the lesson concerns the courage to stand on our own, make mature decisions, and become responsible for the direction of our lives. The trine suggests that something lasting can be built from what the eclipse reveals. We are being asked not merely to express ourselves, but to take responsibility for the life we are creating.

Mercury and Jupiter in Leo

Mercury and Jupiter traveling together through Leo amplify ideas, conversations, announcements, beliefs, stories, and creative expression. Words may carry more influence than usual. We may feel a strong desire to tell our story, speak from the heart, teach, inspire, persuade, or make an important declaration. Jupiter enlarges whatever it touches. In Leo, it expands the desire for joy, creative freedom, leadership, confidence, and meaningful self-expression. Mercury gives these themes language. This can be an inspiring combination, but it can also exaggerate certainty, pride, drama, or the need to be heard.

Mercury Opposite Pluto Retrograde

Mercury’s opposition to Pluto intensifies communication and exposes what has been hidden beneath the surface. Conversations may become revealing, confrontational, obsessive, or transformative. Information may emerge that permanently changes our understanding of a situation. Across Leo and Aquarius, this opposition emphasizes the tension between the individual voice and the collective narrative. Mercury opposite Pluto can tempt us toward manipulation, suspicion, coercion, power struggles, or all-or-nothing thinking. Yet it can also support profound psychological insight.

Mercury Trine Neptune and Sextile Uranus

Mercury’s connection with Neptune opens intuitive, imaginative, spiritual, and symbolic channels. Insights may arrive through dreams, meditation, synchronicities, music, creativity, or sudden moments of inner knowing. Mercury’s sextile to Uranus brings breakthroughs, surprising information, inventive thinking, and new ways of understanding an old problem. Together, Uranus and Neptune encourage us to listen beyond ordinary logic without abandoning discernment. A new idea may arrive suddenly, but it may have been forming within the unconscious for a very long time. These aspects support inspired communication, creative teaching, spiritual writing, and conversations that awaken something within us.

Venus Trine Uranus and Opposite Neptune

Venus trine Uranus brings a desire for freedom, freshness, honesty, and experimentation within relationships, finances, beauty, and personal values. We may feel drawn toward people or experiences that differ from our usual preferences. Unexpected attractions, changes of heart, or shifts in relationship dynamics are possible. Relationships may require more room to breathe. Old definitions of love, commitment, beauty, or worth may no longer fit who we are becoming. At the same time, Venus opposite Neptune can blur boundaries. It may create idealization, projection, longing, confusion, or the temptation to see someone as we wish they were rather than as they truly are. A connection may feel magical, but magic is not always the same as compatibility. Inspiration is meaningful, but it must eventually be supported by clarity, honesty, and consistent action. This eclipse asks us to distinguish between the love we imagine and the love we are actually living.

Mars square Venus creates tension between desire and receptivity, pursuit and attraction, independence and partnership. What we want may conflict with what we value. Chemistry may be strong, but so may irritation, frustration, or disagreement. This aspect can reveal where we have compromised our values to maintain attraction, approval, or harmony. It may also expose resentment that has been concealed beneath politeness. The goal is not to eliminate tension. Creative tension can bring relationships and artistic expression back to life. The work is to prevent unspoken desire from becoming unconscious conflict.

Uranus Sextile Neptune

The longer-term sextile between Uranus and Neptune forms part of the evolutionary backdrop of this eclipse. Together, they suggest a gradual awakening from collective illusions. New technologies, spiritual movements, creative ideas, and social visions may challenge long-held assumptions about identity, consciousness, community, and reality. Personally, this aspect invites us to imagine a new life while remaining open to paths we could not previously see.

Eclipses, by their very nature, rush into our lives and declare, “Now is the time.” Enjoy the ride. Paths may shift, doors may close, and unexpected turns may redirect your journey. Yet as the familiar falls away, new doors, ones you could not previously see, may begin to open.

As Marilyn Monroe stated, “Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”
